Muscles Need Protein Now!
Developing muscle tone, increasing lean mass, improving muscular strength are basically the same things.
Did you know that building lean muscle mass plays an important role in the prevention of chronic disease and counteracting age-associated loss of muscle mass?
Resistance training is recognised as the best way to build lean muscle mass but in order for this to occur protein needs to be available to use in the synthesis of new muscle.
In the past, the focus has been on whether or not one needs to increase protein intake in order for this to occur. This may or may not be the case, depending on what your level of protein intake is at the moment and how much strength training you are doing. Recently, research has been directed toward the timing of protein ingestion post-exercise.
Findings suggest that ingesting protein immediately before or after resistance training promotes greater increases in muscle mass and strength compared with delaying protein ingestion or not ingesting protein.
These findings have been consistent in athletes, untrained and elderly individuals.

Exercise Can Delay Dementia
The recent research papers outlining the beneficial effects of exercise in delaying dementia is extremely encouraging.
It is possible exercise exerts its effects through increased blood flow to the brain (Delp et al 2001)
This prevents strokes which subsequently stops progression into dementia, and the generation of new nerve pathways (Hannan et al 2003) or a combination of all these factors.
What is also unclear, which will unfold over the next few years, is what the best exercises are to maximize the positive benefits.
But for now we are seeing that 15 minutes of exercise whether walking, calisthenics or swimming 3 times a week gives a 38% less likely chance of developing dementia (Larson et al. 2006), which is very encouraging.

Helen G or HG; Healthfit Exerciser of the Month
‘I feel better when I’m active and wanted a level of fitness to enable me to enjoy overseas travel. We asked her what initial barriers she had to overcome. Her response was, ‘Turning up.' ‘Now I'm feeling alive. Prior to Healthfit I was dragging myself around and I thought, if this is what ageing is all about, I’m not sure I want to participate.' When asked what goals have been achieved, HG replied, ‘There was a time when I couldn’t get out of bed. I now attend the gym every day and enjoy it. Healthfit has made a huge difference to me both physically and emotionally.’What’s helped? 'The professionalism and support of Gregg and Jude and the ‘good feeling’ of the centre'.
